On Saturday June 4, 2011 the 6th meeting of the Michigan Regiment took place at the recently renovated 1865 home of Orlando Bustos (‘81) and his wife, Veronne on Gilbert Lake. In attendance at the meeting were:

  • Ed Koster '60
  • Vince Sabatini '04
  • Hayes Crew '57
  • Mariko and Alex McPherson '62
  • Kathy and Pete McLallen '62 & '64C
  • Veronne and Orlando Bustos '81

The meeting started at 5:00 PM with cocktails and hors d'ourves, lots of conversation and a grand tour of the house. The original structure was built in 1865 and has stone walls over two feet thick. You enter the house through a long portico lit with antique, gas lights. The entryway is a large room with a balcony that wraps around three sides. Situated on the opposite wall from the entry door are two, ornate, antique marble firepalces, one on each floor. Veronne and Orlando have replaced the flooring throughout the house with dark, wide planl natural wood, polished to a low luster. They have added a wide open, modern kitchen and additional bedrooms for their three children. The dining room includes a high ceiling with old, exposed beams and the original walk-in fireplace. The house sits on a spectacular lot ovelooking one of Michigan's many lakes.

After dinner we discussed Homecoming and the many positive changes that Col. Gray and his staff have brought to Valley Forge in their first year. We discussed the great improvement in the Corps of Cadets over the last year, Col. Gray's "Honor" challenge early in the year to not only the Corps of Cadets but to the entire staff and the building improvements that are needed particularly as regards Hamilton (Wheeler) Hall. We also discussed the biggest need which is for new students particularly in the academy and how each Alumnus can help (for online application click here).
